PCHRD evaluates 26 research proposals in Caraga

A total of 26 research proposals were evaluated during the Workshop on Framework for Disaster Research: Capacity Enhancement for Disaster Research in Health, headed by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) at Almont Inland Resort, Butuan City on September 26-27, 2016.

The two-day workshop was attended by participants coming from the different institutions in Caraga. From the lectures presented by the resource speakers, the participants were able to formulate research proposals anchored on the two main contexts-disaster and health. Participants coming from the same institutions were grouped together while others presented individually.

Dr. Ophelia Saniel of UP Manila discussed the major concepts in disaster research in health.

During the first day, Dr. Ofelia P. Saniel, UP Manila professor from the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and at the same time, a member of HIV/SAIDS Asia Pacific Monitoring and Evaluation Reference Group, gave the course orientation. She also discussed to the participants the different frameworks and its major features, used in disaster research in health.

Former DOH Undersecretary presented the frameworks in DRR and Disaster Research in the Philippines.

Together with Dr. Saniel were Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, the former Undersecretary of the Department of Health and Coordinator of Emergency and Ambulatory Services in UP Manila and Dr. Jessie B. Manuta of the Experts Advisory Panel Foundation for the Philippine Environment. Dr. Herbosa discussed the topic on Philippine National Disaster Risk Management Plan while Dr. Manuta talked on the Relief and Recovery and Risk Reduction Frameworks.

The workshop would not be completed without exercises for the participants. In different groups, they were asked to analyze two research articles: “A Community-bases Gastroenteritis Outbreak After Typhoon Haiyan, Leyte, Philippines, 2013” and “A Snapshot of Catastrophic Post-Disaster Health Expenses After Typhoon Haiyan”. They were tasked to identify the hazard, nature of hazard, the event, the structural damage and the functional damage reported on the research results. A representative from the group then presented their output and was evaluated by the mentors and other participants.

PCHRD scheduled the Phase 2 of the workshop on October 24-26, 2016 in the same venue to have the presented research proposals modified.
